The psychoanalytic approach
The psychoanalytic approach is foremost an exploration of the influences of the unconscious on our feelings, thoughts, choices, and behaviors. Towards that end, the following techniques can be used.
Free association: It refers to you to share your thoughts and feelings freely. This helps with the emergence of memories and unexpected connections, both of which may help reaching the unconscious.
Dreams: Your dreams are interpreted to gain insights into the workings of your unconscious.
Transference: It occurs when your feelings about other people are projected to the psychoanalyst. You will then interact with your psychoanalyst as if she/he is that other person, which can help your psychoanalyst gain insights into your interactions with other people.
